Today we put together a fun art project where we webbed together strings of "sound." At the end of the day we added the finishing details for our performance on Friday 2/27 and Sunday 2/29!
Today we built bridges between the Mariachi ensemble, Chinese instrument ensemble, and the Ukulele ensemble for one big song. We also fused the choir with the orchestra for the big concert on Friday 7/27 and Sunday 7/29! Hope to see you there!
We started this week with indoor movies during lunch and full orchestra rehearsal to prepare for upcoming concerts on the 27th and the 29th! Which friendly faces are we seeing at the concerts?!
We kicked off this morning with art by creating silhouettes of each other in abstract form! We closed off the day by watching and performing with the Hawaiian Hula group. Our faculty performed live music as we danced. Thank you to the Hawaiian Hula for sharing your art with OPUS!Today we invited the UCLA Chinese Ensemble for our afternoon performance! It was a lot of fun and they let us play ”Jasmine Flower” with them. Thank you to the UCLA Chinese Ensemble for sharing their wonderful music with OPUS 5! #opus5 #smyo #worldmusic #chineseensemble Check out our Facebook page and Instagram! FACEBOOK: Santa Monica Youth Orchestra INSTAGRAM: santamonicayouthorchestra What an AMAZING day we had at CalEarth! Today, we learned how to build earthquake, fire, and flood resistant housing that is an affordable and sustainable way to build homes anywhere on the planet. Through hands-on guided exercises, we learned about this alternative "dome-shaped" architecture and the benefits that it has on our planet. It was especially interesting to see how acoustically sound these structures are! Playing an instrument inside these structures is like being INSIDE the instrument! We had so much fun dancing to "Pineapple Mango" this morning with our teacher, Kumu! Even the teachers got on their feet and danced! Later in the afternoon, we listened to Iranian and Jazz Fusion music performed by the Sibarg Ensemble (Hesan Abedini, Niloufar Shiri, and Josh Charney). Thank you for sharing your music with OPUS 5! We were visited by the Cal Poly Pomona Mariachi Ensemble led by one of our teachers, Jessie Vallejo! We sang multiple mariachi hits together including songs from Coco! Thank you Jessie and the Cal Poly Pomona Mariachi Ensemble for sharing your music with us at OPUS 5! In addition to orchestra instruments and Chinese instruments, students can also participate in choir and guitar classes. |
