Laura Jane Yee, Coordinator
Laura is an Ethnomusicology student at UCLA who aims to share her fascination and respect for world cultures with the rest of the world.
Born in Penang, Malaysia, she was first exposed to Indonesian gamelan and wayang kulit music through a youth heritage program. Her music training began in earnest when she picked up the alto saxophone at age nine, and went on to attend the Manuel de Falla music conservatory in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Upon graduating high school in Singapore, she was awarded the Dick Lee Award for the Arts in recognition of her heavy contributions to the musical and artistic life at school.
Laura is now a junior at UCLA, and has participated in and performed with various ensembles across the Music department - including Bulgarian choir, Indian sitar, Chinese ensemble (erhu), Balinese gamelan, African-American gospel choir, UCLA Chorale, Ellingtonia jazz band, and Symphonic Band. With her breadth of musical styles and her fluency in Mandarin and Spanish, she hopes to work at a non-profit world arts organization upon graduation.
